Availability heuristics and availability cascades (I’ve posted about this before). See this dense article for a nice review of the concept of availability cascades in particular
Pluralistic ignorance: a concept which I was reminded of recently from my social psychology days. It basically is the idea that people can be convinced their viewpoints are minority views when actually they are the majority, simply because the minority is louder, more bombastic, and more visible.
Public choice theory: The idea that because of incentive structures and self-interest, the idea of “selfless public servant” bureaucracies is a myth. Public Choice Theory provides a parsimonious and elegant theory as to why government bureaucracies never shrink and always grow - they always justify their own growth and existence.
I may use these ideas later to do another (again, more theoretical) article in the near future. Our media landscape has changed so, so much in the last 25 years it’s not even funny. It’s good for all of us to understand it extremely well.
