In the case of those who passed these couple of years, this misanthropic attempt at safety has robbed both the elders, and their families, of the unique experience of life's sunset moments.
Holding hands may seem a simple thing, but there is something special shared that should circumstances allow, no one should ever be deprived of. As the younger generation, the skin of your forebear has a cool, fragile, yet well worn feel. Those hands worked hard to give you a better opportunity than they had. You cannot forget how those hands felt.
The elder generation feels a warm and strong hand of the later generations, still capable of accomplishing more in this world. Holding the young hand brings back fond memories of both their progeny, and of themselves when they were younger. They don't want to let go because this little thing has become everything.
This is a connection and a joy that makes the inevitable cycle of life more tolerable, allowing that non-verbal exchange of gratitude and a feeling of familial appreciation and pride.
To deprive an elder of this simple dignity, and their family members of the associated fulfillment, as well as a better understanding of their own future, robs the dawn that should rise after the dark night of the soul.
Gratitude, oulala!!! this is a concept hardly put into practice as gratitude means you pay respect to the past, your know that you are the heir of a world, that BEFORE you, there were many people WORTH maybe MORE than you. In a post progressive trans humanist society , where the individual is autogenerated from beginning to "no end," (possibly), there is no room for the past.
you are right, but remember, what did THEY want? the older people? their relatives? what did they want? "to save lives" was repeated non stop in all media. I am the criminal, I am super selfish, I am the acme of narcissism and individualism, I am a believer in MY liberty against all those fragile people. The media kept telling us how murderers we are.
This was/is absolute insanity! I just can't believe this is real. Why and how could anyone go alone with this? I watched my elderly neighbors behind me waste away in fear. They even stopped going out in their backyard which I could look into from my second floor. We live in sunny California where it's warm pretty much year round and I watched as the weeds slowly encroached on their patio chairs. The ambulance was there multiple times, numerous falls by one or the other and they couldn't help the other up. Once I saw someone inside, perhaps they were cleaning the house, or a family member visiting, when she caught sight of me she quickly drew the curtains but not before I saw she was masked and gloved up. It was weird, like a hazmat situation. But that's our new normal in California. Treat the elderly like they are E.T and Eliot when the government got a hold of them.

So very sad. And so unnecessary.

An absolute abomination. I strongly believe that Andrew Cuomo meant to kill seniors. Also that his removal for "Roman hands" was a cover-up for that.

Absolutely heartbreaking—and infuriating. Thank you for fighting for these vulnerable and abused souls.
I touched on this tragedy last year:
